En los últimos tiempos se ha generado una nueva ola de artistas que niegan la muerte del r&b, con The Weeknd y Frank Ocean en la cresta. Quienes vivimos bajo la influencia de los sonidos de los 90 debemos aceptar que Jodeci, Blackstreet o Mint Condition atrás quedan. Hoy por hoy, el r&b se asienta sobre términos como post dubstep, pop futuristic soul, electro r&b o, el usado hasta la saciedad, neo soul.
La inagotable escena musical de la capital de reino británico nos ha regalado en el último año múltiples y agradables sorpresas: Rudimental, Disclosure, Jessie Ware o Bondax. El sabor del sonido clásico se paladea, eso sí, cocinado por las manos de veinteañeros con descaro. AlunaGeorge son los últimos en subirse al carro con un larga duración llamado Body Music bajo el brazo.
El White Noise de Disclosure puso en la escena a este dueto londinense; Aluna Francis (la voz) y George Reid (el productor con look de nerd). El resultado de su trabajo se plasma en un álbum conformado por pistas resultonas («Outlines», «Your Drum, Your Love» o «You know u like it») y algún experimento fallido como el cover del «This is how we do it», de Montell Jordan.
No han inventado la pólvora, ni descubierto el Santo Grial, pero, definitivamente, están dándole un manguerazo a uno de los veranos mas calurosos recordados en UK desde hace mucho. Presentes en la mayoría de carteles festivaleros que decoran el Reino Unido, seguro que sonarán hasta aburrirnos, tanto sus versiones originales como en las múltiples remezclas que pululan por la red (Bondax, Hudson Mohawke, Friendly Fires o Duke Dumont).
Su futuro está por ver, en nuestras manos queda la opción de disfrutar distendidamente de Body Music o, simplemente y con cierto escepticismo, don´t believe the hype.
It`s no secret that, during the last few years, a new generation of artists who deny R&B`s dead is emerging, leading the way, Toronto`s own The Weeknd and California based Frank Ocean. From this side of the Atlantic, the inexhaustible London music scene has been offering us diverse and great surprises: Rudimental, Disclosure, Jessie Ware, Bondax and others. All of them maintaining the classic sound enhanced by the audacity of youth. Those of us living under the influence of the 90`s sounds should accept that Jodeci, Blackstreet or Mint Condition are things of the past. R&B now comes under terms such as post-dubstep, futuristic pop-soul, electro r&b or the well-worn name of Neo Soul.
AlunaGeorge, with an acclaimed LP called Body Music, are the latest to join that circle of London`s newcomers. Aluna Francis, the voice and image, George Raid, the producer with the nerdy look. Another english band, Disclosure, put them under the radar through the effective housy joint White Noise.
The majority of the album is made up of good tracks, except for the failed attempt at a cover of Montell Jordan`s «This is how we do it», this fact leads listeners to realize that they haven`t invented gunpowder or discovered The Holy Grail, but it`s not doubt that they are cooling the atmosphere through radio waves and players in one of the hottest summers in the UK in years.
We may witness AlunaGeorge`s future success if we stay tuned into Body Music or their upcoming releases. Until then, don`t believe the hype.
